Programming language Python's popularity: Ahead of Java for first time but still trailing C Python is now the second most popular language in the nearly 20-year-old Tiobe index.

Tiobe analysts believe that within three to four years' time, Python will "probably replace C and Java" to become the most popular programming language in the world.

For the first time in the history of TIOBE's index, Java has slipped out of the top two, leaving Python to occupy the spot behind reigning champion, C.

Java ranked fourth in the December 2022 Tiobe index of programming language popularity, the lowest Java has ranked in the history of the index.
