Michigan's recent string of tornadoes has brought the statewide total to 25 so far this year through Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. "Through mid-May, that's the fastest pace we've experienced," said Steven Freitag, a meteorologist with the agency based in White Lake Township.

Three tornadoes touched down across southeast Michigan early Thursday morning as a powerful line of thunderstorms swept through the region, according to National Weather Service damage surveys.

At around 9:30 p.m., the National Weather Service declared a tornado watch for Mid and West Michigan counties, with severe thunderstorm warnings being issued in the Grand Rapids, Muskegon, and Ludington areas. At 11:40, a tornado watch was declared for all of Southeast Michigan.
