#DidYouKnow that baby turtles hatch out with an umbilicus? This is a raised area on the plastron (bottom shell) where the yolk has been absorbing into the little turtle's body. Once a hatchling emerges from its egg, it typically takes a few days for this "scar" to fully close up. We will keep the baby terrapins in our incubator during this time and clean the umbilicus daily to prevent any infection. This includes a quick Betadine scrub, a saline rinse, and a little bit of silver-based cream. #ge

It's hard to believe but our numbers are still increasing. Yesterday we took in a snapping turtle that was injured in an excavation incident. An ill painted turtle also arrived - it was found on someone's front lawn. We received 3 snapping turtle hatchlings yesterday and 2 today - both were in nests attacked by predators. Then we have eggs still in the incubators, some of which are hatching! Here is a video of a snapping turtle, so new that he still hasn't absorbed his egg sack - you can see it

Occasionally the first water source hatchling turtles come across are chlorinated swimming pools. Usually these guys are fine after a few days of observation but sometimes they can react badly.
